Glamping at Camp Katur in the Magical Woodland Hide Unidome

Glamping at Camp Katur in the Magical Woodland Hide Unidome

It's May - how did that happen already?! I feel like April marked a change in the seasons. As wet and snowy as it's been at times, I felt like we could finally bid farewell to what felt like an eternal winter. Me and Josh have been day tripping every weekend lately and I'm feeling so much more energised.

In the last few weeks, we've been to Whitby, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park to view the KAWS exhibition and for a long walk in our favourite woodland here in Leeds. When we realised that we had a free weekend at the very end of April, coincidentally the bank holiday, we decided to book a last-minute adventure and go camping. I've mentioned our love for glamping before, but we wanted try somewhere closer to home than our usual Welsh getaway and J decided that he wanted a hot tub, so that was my criteria as I set about searching for a new place to visit. We almost went to a place in Lincoln, but happened upon a place called Camp Katur. I'm so glad we did...

Camp Katur (Katur is Icelandic for 'happy') is a glamping site on the edge of North Yorkshire and Darlington, sitting in the middle of both the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors National Parks. It's a little over an hour's drive from Leeds and close to the market town of  Masham, home to The Druid's Temple - a favourite place of ours to visit, if not for the hot chocolate and cake from The Bivouac cafe.

The site has a range of other worldly accommodation, including; safari tents, bell tents, tipis, hobbit pods and geodomes. They're all tastefully decorated and made to feel like a home away from home, with blankets, fairy lights and hot water bottles to keep away the chills. Initially, we were going to book one of the tipis, until we discovered the 'Woodland Hide Unidome', a 360ยบ, clear panoramic dome set in enchanting woodland. This, along with their eco sauna and hot tub, had us sold.

On the morning of the day we were going to Camp Katur, I awoke to a flurry of snow photos on Instagram (who needs to check the weather nowadays?!) that had us worrying we would have to cancel - though we later came around to the idea that it might be charming to sit inside the Unidome surrounded by snow. However, the snow had cleared up by midday, along with our romantic snowed-in notions. We packed up the car and set off, making a pit stop at Josh's parents'. They live near Pateley Bridge, which is almost on the way to Camp Katur from Leeds. It was his dad's birthday so we wanted to give him his gifts and indulge in a late veggie brunch, courtesy of Josh's mum.

After filling our bellies, we arrived at the campsite, checked-in and got settled (read: lit the fire and poured a G&T). Up close the Unidome is breathtaking, even more so as night falls, and the iPhone photos here don't do it justice. We spent the three heavenly nights feasting on barbecued vegetable and halloumi skewers, corn on the cob and tofu dogs, drinking prosecco and Forest Gin, taking a dip in the hot tub and sitting around the campfire reading, chatting and enjoying the sounds and sights of the forest - AKA chirpy birds, rustling trees and cheeky squirrels. We were treated to clear skies which made for stargazing aplenty at bedtime. It rained intermittently on our final day and got heavier at night, but it didn't dampen our spirits one bit - we got cosy inside the Unidome and played Scrabble by candlelight (yes, we are both under 30...).

As well as spending time at the camp site, over the course of the weekend we drove up to The Druids Temple to stretch our legs and enjoy some treats from the cafe, got ice creams from the Brymor dairy (a Yorkshire Dales landmark!) and demolished a delicious Sunday dinner at a quaint pub in a nearby village. If it happens to be a rainy day, there's plenty nearby to do and see in the rolling hills of Yorkshire.

As far as facilities go at Camp Katur, you couldn't ask for more when glamping. 50 meters away up the path (this seems close, but the Unidome is quite well covered away from the other dwellings) is a spacious, communal kitchen with lighting, hot water and sinks, tables, gas hobs, kettles and utensils. Outside the kitchen there is a sheltered seating area that I imagine is lovely to sit in with other campers on a balmy summer's evening. Nearby is the toilet and shower blocks, split into men's and women's, with two toilets and two showers in each one. They get cleaned several times a day and the hot water runs well.

It's worth mentioning that the eco hot tub and sauna are not included in the price of your accommodation. You can add on a session (or multiple sessions) at the time of booking, you then email ahead to choose a time slot. We had our spa session on the Saturday evening and were blessed with sunshine - the rain clouds in the photo above blew over, thankfully. The hot tub is wood fired and you just throw some logs on every so often to keep the fire ticking over. It was the perfect temperature and you can't beat the feeling of the hot water, while there's a gentle breeze blowing.

We had such a wonderful long weekend that I had a lump in my throat when we left. We've actually booked to go back and will be spending four nights there in early September, which also happens to fall in between my birthday and our first wedding anniversary. Perfect timing.

You can see pricing for all the accommodation at Camp Katur here.
